Super Typhoon Inday (Bavi) Slightly Intensifies; Monsoon, Rough Seas to Affect Puerto Galera and Much of the Philippines

Super Typhoon Inday (international name Bavi) has slightly intensified over the Philippine Sea. While its centre is east of Northern Luzon, the storm is expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing strong winds and dangerous seas to Puerto Galera and large parts of the country.

Super Typhoon Inday (Bavi) Slightly Intensifies; Monsoon and Rough Seas to Affect Puerto Galera

Super Typhoon Inday, internationally named Bavi, has slightly intensified as it moves west-northwest over the Philippine Sea, east of Northern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11:00 AM bulletin on Wednesday, 08 July 2026.

At that time, PAGASA estimated the typhoon’s eye to be about 1,270 kilometres east of Northern Luzon. Inday was packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometres per hour near the centre with gusts up to 240 kilometres per hour, and was moving west-northwest at 20 kilometres per hour. Strong to typhoon-force winds were reported to extend up to 880 kilometres from the storm’s centre.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was placed over several areas in Northern Luzon, including Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Apayao, Kalinga, Isabela and Ilocos Norte. PAGASA said the highest wind signal during Inday’s passage could still reach Signal No. 2 or Signal No. 3 depending on changes in the storm’s track or intensity.

Although the current forecast does not show a direct landfall over the main Philippine islands, PAGASA warned Inday would enhance the Southwest Monsoon (habagat). That enhancement is expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts and heavier rains across large parts of the country, including CALABARZON and most of MIMAROPA — the region that includes Puerto Galera — as well as the Bicol Region, most of the Visayas and most of Mindanao.

Sea conditions are forecast to become dangerous along several eastern seaboards. PAGASA advised mariners, especially operators of small boats and motorbancas, to avoid venturing out to sea in affected waters. In some areas, waves may reach up to 4.5 metres, creating risky conditions for all vessels.

For Puerto Galera residents and visitors: prepare for stronger winds, heavier showers and rough seas over the coming days. Coastal and upland communities, as well as those in flood- and landslide-prone areas, should monitor local government advisories and be ready to follow evacuation instructions if issued.

  • Do not go to sea if you operate or plan to use small boats or motorbancas.
  • Secure loose outdoor items and prepare emergency kits (water, food, torch, radio).
  • Avoid low-lying and landslide-prone areas during heavy rains.
  • Follow instructions from the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office (MDRRMO).
  • Monitor official PAGASA bulletins and local disaster advisories.

PAGASA’s bulletin indicated that Inday may pass closest to extreme Northern Luzon by Friday, 10 July, then move toward the southern islands of Japan and the sea north of Taiwan. The storm is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday, 11 July, and possibly make landfall over the eastern coast of mainland China by Sunday, 12 July, according to the current forecast track.

The next tropical cyclone bulletin from PAGASA was expected at 5:00 PM today. Readers should watch for updates from PAGASA, the municipal government of Puerto Galera, and the Oriental Mindoro provincial offices for any local advisories, sea travel restrictions, or evacuation notices.
